New Delhi: Over one and a half years after becoming a member of the Congress social gathering, former scholar chief Kanhaiya Kumar obtained his first main organisational function because the in-charge of the social gathering’s scholar wing, the Nationwide College students Union of India (NSUI).
On Thursday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Kanhaiya, a former president of Jawaharlal Nehru College College students’ Union (JNUSU), as All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of NSUI.
At present, Neeraj Kunadan heads the NSUI — the Congress’ scholar wing — which was established in 1971
After leaving the Communist Social gathering of India (CPI), Kanhaiya joined the Congress social gathering in September 2021, within the presence of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Together with him, one other distinguished younger chief Jignesh Mevani pledged assist to the social gathering.
Nevertheless, since then, Kanhaiya was languishing on the sidelines with the social gathering not giving him any organisational function although he was drafted within the election campaigns in Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Odisha.

Apparently, Kanhaiya had defeated the NSUI presidential candidate to move the scholars’ union at Jawaharlal Nehru College from 2015 to 2016. Again then, the Bihar born scholar chief was affiliated with the All India College students’ Federation (AISF), a Left-wing scholar organisation.
Kanhaiya first rose to prominence when a sedition case was filed towards him, allegedly for elevating “anti-national” slogans at JNU in 2016. He was charged with the case together with fellow scholar leaders Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and a number of other others.
The case introduced the JNU scholar chief into a lot prominence, with many political events and leaders popping out in his assist. Subsequently, he joined the CPI in 2016 and remained with the social gathering until 2021. Throughout his stint with the CPI, he unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Bihar’s Begusarai.
